The joy of experiencing the open water has only grown more profound; the evolution of boat design has enhanced the very essence of the boating experience, making it more thrilling, more efficient, and more captivating than ever before. In this article, we will look into the top 5 most celebrated boat designs, designers, naval architects, and shipyards awarded winners for the BOAT Design and Innovation Awards. The competition held in Austria acknowledges factors like styling, naval architecture, eco-friendly attributes, and more.
Bolide 80 by Victory Design
The Bolide 80 by Victory Design received the most votes; the judges praised the boat's all-carbon harmonious and unified lines, perfectly in line with its intended purpose as a boat capable of reaching 70 knots. Review panelists with automotive design expertise especially valued the nods to great car design. The continuity linking the interior, where the visible carbon structure is employed to great advantage, and the outside demonstrates an integral approach to the design of what is intended to be a limited series for aficionados. Despite it being the smallest boat, it made the strongest impression.
Pink Shadow by Damien Yachting
This striking new addition to Damen Yachting's SeaXplorer line stands out from prior launches due to its larger hull and dark green color. On Pink Shadow, the treatment of the open beach club space and the versatility of the aft section of the main deck function as both a fun location for entertainment and gatherings and a garage to transport tenders. The creative utilization of louvers, as well as the broad acreage at water level, were noted. It did not receive unanimous praise for its "beauty," but it outperformed other finalists due to its deck layout, the fact that it makes a strong and enduring statement, and for being a very well-done example of the "SUV yacht," which is deemed as both multifunctional and enjoyable.
Leona by Unique Yacht Design
The judges were unanimous in their praise, remarking that the design stood out from the crowd, eschewing "safe" choices in favor of a truly memorable presence. Beneath the yacht's stunning exterior lies a masterfully executed design. The clean, linear styling belies the sheer scale of the vessel, creating an illusion of grace and efficiency. Despite its relatively narrow beam, the yacht boasts generous deck spaces and a spacious interior to maximize every inch of available volume. These thoughtful design elements not only enhance the overall aesthetic but also contribute to the onboard experience, setting this yacht apart from the competition. The judges recognized the designers' bold vision and their ability to translate it into a truly remarkable vessel, not only commanding attention but also delivering an exceptional level of performance and livability.
Sarissa by Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design
The level of development and detail on board Sarissa, based on a performance cruising boat profile, won the panel over. The design and execution level of the exterior furniture in the very livable cockpit, which several judges said they had never seen to date on a sailing yacht, was particularly impressive. From bow to stern, no detail has been overlooked, reflecting the meticulous attention to design that permeates every aspect of this remarkable vessel. The design reflects the brief of the experienced owners, who wished for a modern-looking yacht with easy water access, comfort, shade, infinite water views, a Jacuzzi, and a climbing wall, along with exceptional performance. Blending these diverse elements, creating a yacht that not only delivers a one-of-a-kind on-water experience but also commands attention with its striking, contemporary aesthetic.
Maiora 35 Exuma by NEXT Yacht Group
Drawn to the asymmetrical platform for its volume and versatility, the owner tasked the yard with designing an interior that would capture the "gentle forms of nature" and foster an indoor-outdoor vibe in harmony with the sea. Prioritizing natural and recycled materials, the designers have created a space that blurs the boundaries between the vessel and its surroundings. On the main deck, floor-to-ceiling glazed surfaces invite the ocean inside, while the upper deck saloon takes this integration to new heights, with an opening moonroof and drop-down glass panels transforming the space into a flying bridge. An overhead treatment in the saloon cleverly incorporates LED strip lighting, enhancing the seamless flow of the design. Furthering the owner's vision, the unique layout places both the owner's cabin and the wheelhouse on the main deck, allowing for four guest cabins below, ensuring an exceptional onboard experience for all.
