Kitesurfing Adventures in Egypt

Temperatures unfazed by the time of year and consistent wind conditions in Egypt have popularised the wind-powered sport of kitesurfing. Kitesurfers stand on a board while riding a large, steerable kite controlled by the wind, a sport that uniquely blends surfing, windsurfing, paragliding, and wakeboarding. Freestyle tricks and big jumps can be performed depending on the experience of the kitesurfer, with the option of having shallow waters perfect for beginners. Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, gained popularity in the early 2000s in Egypt, where training centres and schools began to appear along the coast in areas such as Hurghada, El Gouna and Safaga. The rise of kite safaris, which are all-inclusive liveaboards exploring multiple remote and often shallow-water locations over several days, has led to a rapid increase in popularity in the 2010s, making Egypt a host for popular international competitions of the sport. Egypt has year-round wind and both flat water and waves, making it suitable for both beginners and the more advanced kitesurfer. Kite camps, all-inclusive trips focused on kitesurfing, are popular amongst solo travellers, where they can meet other like-minded individuals and motivate each other whilst taking part in such an exhilarating sport. There is also the option of kite cruises, an affordable and easily accessible option, perfect for exploring various regions located on the Red Sea.

Chasing the perfect season

Egypt’s reliable sunny temperatures and wind make for one of the best locations to experience this adrenaline-fuelled sport. April to June offers steady wind conditions without extreme heat, with the summer period of July to August having very hot weather, making it ideal for early morning or late afternoon sessions. September and October have slightly cooler temperatures and fewer crowds but offer a great balance of comfort and performance. The ideal time to kite surf in Egypt is between March and October, as the weather and wind conditions are at their optimum. Consistent, strong winds around 15 to 25 knots, coupled with warm air and sea temperatures, offer the best conditions for all levels of experience. On the other hand, from November to February, wind currents are stronger, making it more suitable for advanced kitesurfers.

Egypt’s Must-Visit Kitesurfing Destinations

In Hurghada, there is a stretch of 100 km of sand with some regions having shallow water perfect for beginner kitesurfers and others with intermediate conditions perfect for more experienced kitesurfers. El Gouna is another popular location with water depth reaching between 40 and 70 cm, offering conditions ideal for both beginners and more advanced kitesurfers.  Other popular locations include Soma Bay, Dahab, Marsa Alam and Ras Sedr, which is a hub for migrating birds, so it is also a popular birdwatching spot for those who are not as brave to ride the waves of the Red Sea. A destination for kitesurfing that offers a unique landscape is Safaga, once a quiet fishing village, with its white, sandy beaches and clear, turquoise waters surrounded by mountains. It is also less crowded, making it the perfect place for freestyle riding, and it has strong winds from March to September.

World-class Instruction on the Red Sea

Kitesurfing schools are prominent around these locations, with certified instructors and lessons available in multiple languages, as there is such an international presence with kitesurfing in Egypt. With the lessons being so affordable and the quality of instruction being so high, visitors from the international community flock to Egypt to learn how to kitesurf. Beginner classes involve focus on the basics of kite control, safety and basic riding techniques, whereas advanced coaching includes freestyle tricks, jumps and wave riding. Schools provide equipment for learners, but there is also the option of renting equipment for independent riders. Safety is paramount, so not only do schools provide briefings and supervised sessions, but they also tend to have rescue boats on standby for any emergencies. Kitesurfers are encouraged to check the wind and weather conditions before ensuring they are wearing a helmet, impact vest and harness for their own safety. It is also important to take care of other water users and marine life.

Egypt on the World Stage

Due to Egypt’s popularity in the world of kitesurfing, there are annual events that take place in some of the prime locations along the Red Sea. Events include showcasing both international and local talent, and kitesurfers are judged on height, style and technical execution in big air tricks. Soma Bay and Hurghada are popular locations for major championships because they have consistent conditions, including flat lagoons and steady winds. Types of competitions include freestyle, racing, amateur and open events, allowing non-professional riders to take part.  The competitions often have a festival feel to them, being held close to the shore and including music and beach activities, making it enjoyable for spectators as well as those taking part in the competitions.

By hosting these international events, Egypt has become one of the world’s top kitesurfing destinations. The prime wind conditions and reliable warmth all year long, coupled with the expertise of the schools here, make Egypt the perfect place to get involved in such a thrilling sport. Kitesurfing has contributed to boosting tourism, sports development and has put Egypt on the map as a global sports hub. The best locations for kitesurfing also include activities such as snorkelling and scuba diving, making them the perfect location for visitors of all ages and interests. Whether learning your first launch or chasing big air, kitesurfing in Egypt offers a new way to experience the Red Sea, one defined by freedom, adrenaline and endless wind, with its place on the global kitesurfing map showing no sign of slowing down.
