January 29, 2024

Egyptian Figure Skater to Carry Olympic Flag at Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games 2024

In an unprecedented honor for Egypt, young figure skater Salma ElSakka, Advanced Novice National Champion, was one of the six athletes who carried the Olympic flag during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games in South Korea. This was part of the Dream Program, an initiative hosted by Gangwon Province which provides opportunities for winter sports athletes to train and experience skiing and skating for the youth from countries that do not have a winter season. In particular, youths who have limited access to winter weather or winter sports, or those who have the potential to excel in winter sports, are invited to Pyeongchang.

The Olympic flag was carried by 6 athletes from the 2024 Dream Program to offer them opportunities to realize their potential in winter sports.

A FIRST in Egyptian sports history, this selection marks a significant milestone and also puts Egypt on the global sporting map in winter sports and showcases the universal appeal and inclusive nature of the Olympic movement.

A Symbol of Peace and Unity

Egypt’s selection is a testament to Ice Skate Egypt’s dedication to the sport and the embodiment of these Olympic values as a federation. As a flag bearer, Salma represents not just Egypt, but international athletes from across the globe, standing as a symbol of peace and unity.

A Tribute To Egyptian Talent

“Egypt’s selection as one of the Olympic flag bearers is a proud moment for all Egyptians. It sends a clear message to our young people that with hard work and determination, no stage is too grand, and no dream is out of reach,” said Dr. Heba Guirgis, President, of Ice Skate Egypt, Egyptian Figure Skating Federation. “It is a true honor and a privilege to represent our nation with distinction.”

About The Dream Program

The Dream Program was launched by PyeongChang in 2004 as part of its bid for the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games. Since then, 2528 youths from 97 countries have participated in this program, usually held for 10 days between January and February. This year marks the 20th edition of the Dream Program with 32 countries participating.

Egypt was invited for the first time this year to participate in the Dream Program. Three athletes from Egypt participated; Salma ElSakka, Sarah Abu ElSeoud, and Camilia Abou El Makarem.

The Dream Program nominated 6 participating countries to carry the Olympic Flag during the Gangwon Youth Olympics Opening Ceremony on January 19, 2024. Egypt was one of the 6 chosen countries to carry the flag with Salma ElSakka as the Egyptian representative. The nomination was approved by the International Olympic Committee.
