Inside the PGA Championship

Power, Pressure, Prestige

ONE OF GOLF’S MOST HISTORIC MAJORS

Renowned as one of the golfing world’s most prestigious competitions, the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Championship took place in May at the legendary Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania, USA.  Founded in 1896, Aronimink Golf Club features a golf course designed by Donald Ross, which opened in 1928. The Aronimink Golf Club has hosted several golf tournaments, including the 1962 PGA Championship, the 1977 U.S. Amateur and the 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. The PGA Championship celebrated its 108th edition, welcoming over 150 of the world’s elite golfers, and was set over four days from May 14th to May 17th, 2026.  This tournament is unique for its rotating venues, where each tournament offers a new challenge for players, requiring them to adapt their game to suit the specific characteristics of the hosting course. It is also known for its high prize money, with recent champions winning over $3 million. The champion earns not only the prestige of winning one of golf’s most historic tournaments, but also the honour of lifting the Wanamaker Trophy, which has been passed down from champion to champion since the first tournament in the early 1900s.

RODMAN WANAMAKER’S vision

In January 1916, Rodman Wanamaker, a wealthy businessman and department store heir, established the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) alongside prominent professional golfers at the time. Following the establishment of the PGA, the PGA Championship was founded in 1916 and has been held annually except for four tournaments that were cancelled due to both World Wars. The first championship was held in October 1916 at the Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York, where Jim Barnes was crowned champion, which resulted in him receiving $500 and a diamond-studded gold medal donated by Rodman himself. The initial investment for the tournament was provided by Rodman, including a donation of the Wanamaker Trophy, standing at 2.5 feet (75 cm) tall and weighing 27 pounds (12 kg). Each winner who receives the trophy must return it in time for the upcoming championship; however, they are also given a small replica trophy that they get to keep, commemorating their achievement, coupled with the worldwide recognition of achieving championship status. The championship historically took place in August, until 2019, when it was moved to May to avoid any major clashes with other sporting events such as the NFL (National Football League). With the inclusion of golf in the Olympic Games, this also ensured there were no scheduling conflicts whenever they are hosted every four years. The cooler climate also meant that the tournament could be held in states that tend to have unbearably hot weather during the summer months.

POWER AND PRECISION, ROUND BY ROUND

Although the championship was initially played as match play, this was later changed to stroke play in 1958 since match play was harder for spectators to follow, as well as harder to broadcast. This change meant the competition was also more consistent with other majors in the golfing world. The competition consists of 72 holes with each of the four rounds on a par-70 course, totalling a cumulative par of 280. After the first two rounds, which consist of 36 holes, the top seventy players progress to the next round, whereas the rest are eliminated, thus not making the cut, ending their hopes of winning the Wanamaker Trophy. Qualifying players then progress to the remaining rounds over the weekend, with one ultimately being crowned as the champion at the end of the fourth round. Previous winners have included the likes of Jack Nicklaus (five-time winner: 1963, 1971, 1973, 1975 and 1980), Tiger Woods (four-time winner: 1999, 2000, 2006 and 2007), and Rory McIlroy (two-time winner: 2012 and 2014).

The PGA Championship hosts players who are renowned as top global players, including past champions and club professionals. To qualify for the tournament, players must adhere to qualification criteria, which includes, but is not limited to, being a part of the following categories: former PGA Champions, winners of the last five U.S. Opens, winners of the last five Masters and winners of the last five Open Championships.

A HISTORIC FIRST AT ARONIMINK

At the 2026 Championship, English golfer Aaron Rai won his first major title and had the opportunity to lift the famous Wanamaker Trophy. He is the first English-born player and the first player of Indian heritage to win the PGA Championship in over a century, which was last won in 1919 by Jim Barnes. Rai showed remarkable consistency throughout the championship, remaining among the leading contenders across all four rounds. During the first round, Rai made a steady start to the Championship by ensuring he was focused on accuracy, finishing with an opening-round score of 70. Although he was not at the top of the leaderboard on opening day, he was still within one of the few top contenders. During the second round, Rai began to build momentum and quietly climbed the leaderboard whilst other high-profile players were struggling with the course conditions. The third round saw Rai position himself just two shots behind the leader, where he played with confidence and patience, remaining composed under pressure. The final round proved to be Rai’s strongest performance of the tournament, with the defining moment on the 17th hole where he drained a dramatic 68-foot birdie putt that effectively secured the championship. Across the final three rounds, he scored 69, 67, and 65, which highlighted his consistency throughout the tournament. With a total of 271 strokes, he finished at nine-under-par, earning him the 2026 championship. Rai cleared the field by three strokes, leaving Jon Rahm and Alex Smalley to tie with a total of 274 strokes and at six-under-par. The team at Sports & Fitness would like to congratulate Aaron on his achievement.

Beyond these titans of the game, the unique inclusion of club professionals alongside the world’s elite sets this competition apart from the rest. All four rounds test both power and precision, and the variety of courses that alternate annually provides its own unique challenges to the game. Winning this tournament reflects the highest level of competition in the field of professional golf and secures a player’s place in golfing history. Each year brings a new generation of contenders hoping to secure their place in golfing history, a stage where pressure creates greatness. Becoming the PGA Championship winner is a title that is not given but earned.
